Copenhagen is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to sustainable travel. The tourism board of the capital of Denmark is rewarding you to make green choices when you visit this summer as part of a pilot program that could lead the world in helping both locations and visitors to benefit more from travel.
More popular destinations are struggling with growing numbers of visitors and their impact on the environment and local lifestyle. Instead of restricting visitors or imposing surcharges, famously eco-friendly Copenhagen has come up with a program to treat travelers for taking actions that benefit everyone.
CopenPay is a new initiative “transforming green actions into currency for cultural experiences,” says Visit Copenhagen. The city wants to inspire visitors to make conscious “green choices” and help bridge the gap between visitors’ desires to act sustainably and their actual behaviour while in the city. It makes those “green choices” easy, fun… and rewarding.
CopenPay rewards actions such as cycling, participating in cleanup efforts, or volunteering at urban farms with access to a variety of enriching experiences and everyday wonders of Copenhagen. This includes complimentary guided museum tours, free kayak rentals, and even a free vegetarian lunch made from local produce.
For instance, visitors arriving at the
National Gallery of Denmark with plastic waste are invited to a workshop to turn it into a piece of art. Similarly, taking public transport or a bike to Copenhagen's iconic heating plant gives you access to the unique experience of skiing down the slope on the building’s roof.
(Visit Copenhagen)
Photo: Astrid Maria Rasmussen: Amager Bakke / Copenhill is the artificial ski slope and recreational hiking area built on top of Copenhagen's new waste management centre.
It's also home to the world’s highest, 280-foot high, climbing wall.
Combined, the playful design and recreational activities have created an all-new way to think about urban resource handling and waste-to-energy plants that are actually welcomed by the inhabitants.
The project is one of the steps towards Copenhagen’s goal of becoming the world’s first carbon neutral capital.
The simplicity of the CopenPay system allows easy participation: just show your train ticket, arrive on a bicycle, or present other simple proof of green actions to redeem your rewards.
You’ll be fitting in just like a local: in a city of just over 600,000 residents, there are over 750,000 bicycles. That’s not just more bicycles than people. It’s also 4 times the number of cars in Copenhagen, a city set up for cyclists, with nearly 250 miles of bicycle lanes.
Not only that, but Copenhagen’s famous canals are clean enough to swim in. Nearly three-quarters of the city’s power is generated by renewable energy, and the majority of hotel rooms are eco-certified.
Of course, you’ll still get to enjoy all the famous attractions of Copenhagen: the waterfront statue of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen’s colorful harborfront, world-famous dining as simple as iconic Scandinavian open-face sandwiches all the way to some of the top-rated fine dining venues in the world, and even the country’s coveted ‘hygge’ way of life that regularly puts Danes at the top of the list of the world’s happiest people.
.

CopenPay aims to provide visitors more opportunities to make green choices – and get even better local, cultural, immersive experiences. The pilot project launches July 15, 2024 with over 20 attractions, including
The National Museum,
The National Gallery of Denmark, The Museum of Copenhagen, the running club Sparta,
Green Kayak,
Copenhill,
Øens Have, bike rental from Donkey Republic and many more.

The pilot program of CopenPay will run until at least August 11, with a hope to make it a permanent feature of the city’s travel experience. CopenPay attractions and rewards will be regularly updated at
copenpay.com.
Mikkel Aaro-Hansen, CEO at Wonderful Copenhagen, says the program is inspired to “turn tourism… into a force for positive change, and one important step in this transformation is to change how we move around a destination, what we consume, and how we interact with the locals. With CopenPay we want travellers as well as local attractions to focus on change.”
The hope is not only to continue the pilot project, but also to inspire other cities around the world to introduce similar initiatives that welcome visitors and equally benefit them and the local community.

Mexico is more than beaches. It’s also a country rich in folklore, traditions, culture, history, nature and cuisine. And some of Mexico’s towns have such a concentration of significance and authentic experiences for visitors, they’ve earned the label “Magical.”
As of 2023, 177 towns in Mexico have been designated
“Magical Towns,” or “Pueblos Magicos” by the Mexican government. The program empowers local communities to celebrate and share their unique characteristics, and towns are provided a budget to help maintain the special traditions and experiences that make them so appealing. There are Magical Towns in each of the country’s 31 states, so no matter where in Mexico you are planning to visit, there should be a Magical Town within reach whether you're an adventure seeker, a history buff, a foodie, or simply craving an off the beaten path authentic Mexican experience.
One of the most captivating aspects of Mexico's Magical Towns is their historical significance. Each town has its own story to tell, and you can embark on a journey through time as you explore their cobblestone streets and well-preserved architecture. For example, San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (pictured, top), is renowned for its colonial charm, with its colorful buildings, baroque churches, and vibrant art scene. Strolling through its narrow alleyways feels like stepping into a living history book.
Another jewel among the Magical Towns is Taxco, nestled in the mountains of Guerrero. This town is famous for its silver mining heritage, and you can admire intricate silver jewelry and artisanal crafts in its bustling markets (pictured, below.) The winding streets of Taxco are a photographer's paradise, offering stunning vistas of white-washed buildings and red-tiled roofs against a backdrop of lush greenery.
Nature lovers will find inspiration in the Magical Town of Bacalar, known as the "Lagoon of Seven Colors." Here, you can lose yourself in the mesmerizing hues of the lagoon's crystal-clear waters. Explore its cenotes, lush mangroves, and charming waterfront promenade. Bacalar offers a tranquil escape for those seeking relaxation and connection with nature.
Each Magical Town has its own unique cuisine, allowing food enthusiasts to savor the diverse flavors of Mexico. Oaxaca's culinary delights, for example, are a testament to its rich indigenous heritage. Try the mouthwatering mole, savor tlayudas (large tortillas), and taste traditional mezcal in this gastronomic paradise.
Adventure lovers find thrills in Magical Towns, too.You can hike through the Sierra Gorda's lush forests in Queretaro, go horseback riding in the Copper Canyon of Chihuahua, or explore the underground rivers and caves of Tulum in Quintana Roo. The natural beauty and diversity of these towns make them excellent destinations for outdoor activities.
Many Magical Towns that preserve cultural traditions host festivals and events throughout the year, giving travelers the chance to be a part of ancient rituals and celebrations. For example, the Day of the Dead festivities in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, are world-renowned, and the town comes alive with colorful altars, marigold petals, and candlelit processions each November.
Exploring Mexico's Magical Towns gives you the opportunity to celebrate some of the best and most cherished aspects of Mexico’s incredible tapestry of history, culture, nature and cuisine. You’ll meet local people passionate about their community and sharing it with visitors, and your heart will also be warmed knowing you are playing a part in helping preserve the country’s local treasures, and support communities, local artisans, small businesses and responsible tourism for generations of travelers to enjoy in Mexico.

Bali's exclusive beach enclave of
Nusa Dua in the southeast part of the island, Courtyard Bali Nusa Dua Resort invites guests to experience unmatched tropical escape in “the Island of the Gods.”
Nestled in the heart of the resort, the lagoon pool measures nearly 300 feet long and over 100 feet wide, it is surrounded with lush tropical gardens and an array of pool loungers offering ample space to soak up the sun, and indulge in refreshing cocktails at the Pool Bar located conveniently at the Pool Island, where loungers and shaded cabanas provide a serene sanctuary where guests can escape and immerse themselves in the beauty of Bali's natural landscape.
For those who are looking for a romantic getaway, the pool island is also popular romantic dinner and intimate wedding venue.
In addition to the main pool, Courtyard Bali Nusa Dua Resort boast 3 other swimming pools, including the newest addition and already-iconic attraction - the Lazy River. Guests can leisurely float along this winding watercourse, embracing the essence of relaxation as they meander through the resort's lush grounds.
The Marriott-family resort is also on one of Bali’s legendary beautiful beaches, making its beach club another destination for guests.
CAN’T-MISS BALINESE EXPERIENCES OFF YOUR RESORT:
Natural Wonders in Bali include some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, from lush rice terraces on mountainsides, volcanic peaks, pristine beaches, and lush jungles. Its diverse geography provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing, snorkeling, and diving.
Rice Terraces in Bali form intricate patterns, cascading down hillsides as they are sculpted into the landscape. They are fundamental to local agriculture but also symbolic of Bali’s rich heritage. The thousand-year-old traditional Balinese subak irrigation system is a UNESCO World Heritage treasure, and emphasizes cooperative and community-based water management with harmony between humans and nature.
Rich Balinese Culture is vibrant and deeply rooted in Hindu traditions. Visitors can explore ancient temples, witness traditional dance performances, and participate in colorful ceremonies and festivals.
Balinese Traditional Architecture follows the Tri Mandala concept, which divides space into three zones representing the realms of the gods, humans, and demons. This concept is reflected in the layout of traditional compounds, with separate areas for the family temple, living quarters and kitchen. Balinese architecture often features open-air pavilions and courtyards that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design allows for natural ventilation, making buildings comfortable in the tropical climate while also fostering a connection with nature. Buildings are typically topped with thatched roofs contributing to the rustic and natural aesthetic of Balinese architecture. And intricate woodcarvings decorate doors, window shutters and roof trim with elaborate motifs inspired by Hindu mythology, nature and Balinese folklore.
Bali's Cuisine is diverse and flavorful, influenced by various cultures, including Indonesian, Chinese, Indian, and Dutch. Visitors can sample a wide array of dishes, from local specialties with flavors unmatched by any other global cuisines, like Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Babi Guling (suckling pig) to international cuisines served in restaurants and cafes across the island.
Arts and Crafts are legendary in Bali, including intricate woodcarvings, batik textiles, and traditional Balinese paintings, which also make worthy souvenirs of your travels. Bali is a shopper's paradise, with bustling markets, boutique shops, and art galleries offering a wide range of goods, including clothing, handicrafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. Ubud, Seminyak, and Kuta are particularly popular shopping destinations.

Of all the creatures of the oceans, seahorses may be one of the most magical and endearing. And now, a new maritime preserve in the Caribbean with the densest population of seahorses in the world has been designated to protect this weird and wonderful fish.
Seahorses are indeed fish! But they are unique among fish species, with that distinctive upright posture, horse-like head, prehensile tail that can grasp onto things… and bony armor instead of scales. If you were asked to invent a mythical sea creature, it might be a seahorse.
They use long snouts to suck up small crustaceans and plankton. And in many species, it’s the male that becomes pregnant, following courtship that involved intricate dances, with seahorse couples adorably intertwining their tails and changing color.
Seahorses are found in shallow, tropical and temperate waters around the world – but many of the nearly four dozen species worldwide are critically threatened.
Now, the 33rd national park in the Bahamas has been designated. Seahorse National Park at Hatchet Bay Cave and Sweetings Pond is on the island of Eleuthera.
Sweetings Pond is a large, land-locked saltwater pond in Hatchet Bay on the island. It has many unique natural features, but the most notable of them all is its incredible seahorse population, which is believed to be the densest population of seahorses in the world.
The Bahamas’ new 548-acre national park protects the entire one-mile-long pond and the surrounding land, which is a blend of regrowing forest, mangroves, and farmlands.
In addition, the new national park includes the extensive Hatchet Bay Caves system. This historic cave system is a popular attraction and contains a number of impressive geological features. It is one of the longest dry cave systems in
The Bahamas.
The designation of Seahorse National Park after a decade of community efforts has been called a symbol of the country’s commitment to “our community, to future generations and to the world” to “safeguard our natural heritage and unique and diverse ecosystems and create a harmonious relationship between economic progress and environmental preservation,” said authorities.
“We believe we can transform Sweetings Pond into a world-class national park, conserving all of its biodiversity while boosting the economy of Eleuthera through ecotourism.”
Authorities are developing a park management plan and working on next steps to re-open the designated park area with new infrastructure including walking trails, research initiatives, and educational exhibits while maintaining its core mission of safeguarding its treasured population of seahorses.
The Bahamas National Trust, which is responsible for building and managing the country’s 2 million acres of land and sea national parks in the country, says it is especially devoted to developing a science-based ecotourism plan to support local businesses on the island while conserving the park’s sensitive and precious natural space.

The layout of the gardens today still retains the same English style, offering a blend of nature and art with wide-open spaces, tree-lined paths, and beautifully landscaped areas.
A short stroll takes you back to the hotel for an evening dining experience at the hotel's rooftop restaurant that that mirrors the lush greenery and florals of the Villa Borghese gardens below.
Vatican Gardens
The Vatican Gardens reveal a more spiritual side of the Vatican rarely seen by visitors who are usually more focused on its powerful architecture. But this extensive ensemble of gardens and green space covers more than half of Vatican City, and has been a place of quiet and meditation for the popes since the 1200’s.
Palazzo Colonna
Palazzo Colonna is one of the oldest and largest private palaces in Rome. The palace and its gardens are a testament to the wealth, power, and influence of the Colonna family, one of the most prominent aristocratic families in Italian history.
The gardens are designed in the Baroque style, with manicured lawns, ornamental fountains, marble statues, and geometrically arranged flower beds with an emphasis on symmetry, order, and grandeur.
The Gardens of Lazio
You’ll also head out of Rome, to the Landriana and Ninfa gardens in the natural beauty of Lazio. Your expert guides will reveal the history and botanical significance of Landriana Garden, a romantic site along the Latium coast owned by one of Rome’s most significant families.
Later, exploring the gardens and ruins of Ninfa, you’ll see exotic plants like avocado and banana trees that can grow in the unusual coastal climate. But it is the dreamy atmosphere of the ruins delicately draped in climbing roses and soft English landscape style which make this garden truly remarkable.
Castello Ruspoli
Medieval Castello Ruspoli is renowned for its Renaissance gardens which are considered among the most beautiful and well-preserved examples of Italian garden design.
Palazzo Parisi &
Cypress and olive trees create a serene landscape at Palazzo Parisi, a medieval fortified house that features magnificent gardens overseen by renowned landscape designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd, with views across the Sabine Hills.
Villa d'Este in Tivoli
Tivoli is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Villa d'Este is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, but it is the garden that has captivated visitors for centuries. It has a spectacular display of water features, with fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, and music created by hydraulic organs within some fountains, making it a precursor of the kind of baroque elaboration of gardens that would become popular in the following centuries across Europe.
